Las Breas de San Felipe

This work illustrates Las Breas de San Felipe, a Pleistocene–Holocene tar deposit of major importance for Cuba's paleontological heritage and the largest single-site bird record in the country. In a paleoenvironment of dry plains dotted with isolated lagoons, these tar seeps became deadly traps. Among its jewels are the giant birds Gigantohierax suarezi, Gymnogyps varonai, Ornimegalonyx oteroi, Oscaravis olsoni, Mycteria wetmorei and Ciconia lydekkeri.
