After a long wait, the new crocodyliform discovered in the Chorrillo Formation, about 30 km southeast of the city of El Calafate, has finally been published. Kostensuchus atrox is a new taxon that joins the family of Peirosaurids, a group of notosuchian crocodyliforms. It is a distant relative of the “Boar Crocodile” (Kaprosuchus). The material corresponds mainly to the animal’s anterior region, with a very well-preserved and articulated skull, along with cervical and dorsal vertebrae, its pectoral and pelvic girdles, and both humeri. Riojavenatrix lacustris is a newly described spinosaurid, published on February 19, 2024. Initially thought to belong to Baryonyx, the fossils revealed a unique combination of features that led to the naming of a new genus. Its name means “lake hunter from La Rioja”, referring to both its locality in Argentina and its likely paleoenvironment. It is also one of the youngest known baryonychine spinosaurids in the fossil record.
